                      Grow, Apple, Grow!

(An interactive story)

Materials:  Colored paper, green, yellow, and red; a brown or black sheet (for the dirt)

Read a story about things that grow.

Have children kneel around the sheet.  Say "This is our pretend dirt and we're going to plant our Magic Seeds and grow apple trees."
(have children choose the color paper they want and then have them put it behind them.

"What should we do first if we plant something?"
                 1.  dig a hole
                 2.  plant magic seeds
                 3.  cover seeds back up with dirt
Ask the children "What do the seeds need to make them grow?"
   1.  They need rain (wiggle fingers down)
   2.  They need sun (put hands over head)
        (repeat rain and sun)

Then say "Look! They are growing!  And see how big they are!"

Have children take their paper and hold it.  On the count of three, start to quickly squeeze and scrunch the paper into a ball.
(Model the scrunching of the paper). Gently toss them into the middle of the sheet.

Have children grasp the sheet, slowly stand up and take a step back, making sure the sheet is taut..  Say to the children "Grow, Apple, Grow!" and shake the sheet up and down.

                  Farmer McGregor's Garden
                            (An interactive story)

After reading the Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter

Materials to have: Basket with veggies in it (we use flannel and precut paper ones), a hat for Farmer McGregor (can be teacher or assistant, you can use the teacher or assistants name Farmer Mc_______.

Instructions:Have children in large open space, form a circle.  Show the children the veggies and have them name them.  Lay them in the circle as you name them.  Tell the children that we are going to act out Farmer McGregor's Garden and guess who is going to be Farmer McGregor?

"Farmer McGregor has been working hard in his/his garden (teacher stands outside of circle) when along came Peter Rabbit
(child's name) and Peter Rabbit (child's name)"Children hop into the garden and pick up a veggie.
      Hippity Hop without a stop
They were looking for some lunch
They nibble, nibble, crunch (pretend to nibble)
      They found (
veggie) and (veggie)

Farmer McGregor is hoeing his garden when he looks around and says "Bunnies in my garden.  Oh No!  Shoo bunnies, get out of my garden.  (Farmer McGregor chases the bunnies).  The bunnies run back to the circle and they sit down.  The circle is their home and they are safe.

Apple Sauce

Ingredients:
    1 small apple per child
     cinnamon to taste
      sugar to taste

Have several apples set aside and peeled (place in a bowl of water with a dash of lemon juice to prevent discoloring.

Have children explore the unpeeled apples.  Talk about the features of the apple, color, size, smell.  Ask if it makes a sound.  Discuss the parts of the apple as you peel it. Don't forget to look at the star inside the apple.

If you are using different kinds of apples, you can discuss how even though the apples all look different but are still apples.  This is a nice time to talk about the concept of diversity.

Give each child a piece of peeled apple to chop into pieces.  Wash apples after they are chopped and place them in a pot with a tight fitting lid.  Add cinnamon, sugar, and a few tablespoons of water.  Place the lid on and put on low heat.  Cook until apples are soft.  Add more water if necessary.  When apples are soft mash them with a fork or potato masher.  I love to leave it chunky and serve warm on graham crackers.

See the colors of the apples
Feel the smoothness of the apple's skin
Hear the chop, chop, chop
Smell the apples cooking
Taste the warm applesauce
